DESCRIPTION

From the Greek varieties Malagousia and Debina which are grown in the Domaine’s own vineyards “White Soils” (Malagouzia) and the hill of “Prophet Elias” in Zitsa (Debina), located at an altitude of 500 and 700 meters respectively. The continental climate of the region, characterized by mild winters and cool summers, proves ideal for the cultivation of these two varieties and renders delicate flavours of exotic fruits to the wine. Colour: Pearled with greenish nuances. Nose: Aromas of fresh peach, pineapple, mango, melon, citron and hints of white tea. Mouth: Delicate with balanced acidity and interesting exotic note. Debina’s characteristic minerality is present.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Grapes

Debina

Debina is a white grape variety from the Zitsa region of Epirus. It is used to produce intense wines of superb quality and freshness. Due to its high acidity levels, it is a perfect choice for sparkling wine production. It represents aromas of apple, pear and peach.

Malagousia

Malagousia is an aromatic white variety grown primarily in Macedonia and Central Greece. The variety was rescued from near extinction in 1983 by the winemaker Evangelos Gerovassiliou, after he singled out the variety in the local vineyards and planted out his own at Epanomi, on the Halkidiki peninsula, with the variety. Malagousia is best known for its citrus and peach aroma characteristics, often showing various melon and pear flavours on the palate. It is often used as a blending variety, most notably with Assyrtiko, to which it adds exciting aromas and delicacy.

Producer

Glinavos
In the most remote and distant vinicultural region of Greece, in the North-West of the country, as well as the smallest PDO region to be found in Greece, Glinavos vineyards are located within the Pindos mountain range and around the old town of Zitsa, 17 km NW from the city of Ioannina. They extend to approximately 60 hectares at an altitude of 650-700m, where the climate is predominantly continental with cold, early starting winters, cool summers and a good amount of precipitation. Here, the indigenous grape varieties “Vlahiko”, “Bekari” and above all the white “Debina” grow. “Debina” gives to the zone the privilege to produce wines of Protected Designation of Origin and traditionally sparkling. This sparkling wine style has been produced in the area for centuries and Zitsa receives a notable mention by Lord Byron in his poem “Pilgrimage of Child Harold”, written in 1809, during the poet’s visit to the local monastery.
